Most countries require six months of validity from your date of return, and several require two blank pages. If your passport expires within a year, renew it before you book anything. Tatkal renewal at the Shimla PSK takes roughly a week including police verification.
Thailand and Indonesia offer visa on arrival or visa exemption for Indian passport holders, Singapore and Vietnam use straightforward e-visas, and Malaysia is similarly simple. These are the right places to start. Schengen and the UK need appointments, bank statements and lead time – save them for trip number two.
Carry a forex card plus a small amount of local currency for airport transport. Tell your bank you are travelling. An international roaming pack for the first day is worth it even if you plan to buy a local SIM, because you will need connectivity before you clear immigration. Download offline maps.
Passport, visa, return ticket, hotel voucher and insurance certificate – one printed set in your cabin bag and one photographed on your phone. Immigration officers at some airports still ask to see a printed return ticket.
Three hours before an international departure, four during peak season at Delhi T3. From Shimla, factor a minimum of eight hours by road to Delhi airport and add a buffer night if your flight leaves before noon.
